Adapt 2-layer SMA to multilayer model t 0 = 0:00 t 0 +24 ht 0 +12 / +15 h 24 h routine forecast 2 additional 15 h forecasts j ‘ = j + running SMA for t=t0 2 nd ELDAS progress meeting, Madrid 2003 SMA is started every daily cycle at 0:00 UTC analysis time. –Soil moisture at the previous day is adjusted to reduce forecast error of screen level temperature during day time. –The variational procedure requires an additional 15 hour forecast for every soil layer. –Due to computational costs this can not be done for 5 or more layers in an operational system. –Therefore different layers in the multilayer system are combined to two layers and the SMA is performed for these two layers. –Finally moisture increments are redistributed to the multilayer system

Functionality of multilayer SMA Two main qualitative criteria –Positive soil moisture increments for positive temperature bias (i.e. T 2m (fc) -T 2m (obs) > 0) –Strong impact for clear sky conditions, no impact in cloud covered regions 2 nd ELDAS progress meeting, Madrid 2003
