Scene 2 “Tis an unweeded garden that grows to seed…” Method: Metaphor Weed  Claudius Garden  Denkmark

Connect METHOD to MEANING Weed:  No worth  Reproduces quickly  Invasive  Survive in diverse environments  Aggressive  Unwanted Garden  Beautiful  Requires time/effort  Enjoyment  Valuable

How does this metaphor convey Hamlet’s thoughts about Denmark?

After Hamlet contemplates suicide as an escape from the rotten world of Denmark, he compares his country’s state to an “unweeded garden.” Claudius, his uncle whom he suspects of corruption, represents the weed which aggressively invades the flourishing garden: Denmark. Without King Hamlet there to pick out the corruption, Hamlet knows Claudius’ influence will pervert the nation and destroy the goodness that his father worked so diligently to build.

DEPTH Break down the device, piece by piece Explain how each of those pieces contribute to the overall meaning Notice how the analysis linked the device to a main theme/message: CORRUPTION.
