Original function: move military through the state Notable Highways I-75: runs from Miami to Michigan I-95: goes through coastal area and runs from Florida to Maine

5 Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport
Location: Atlanta Named after: William Hartsfield and Maynard Jackson Hartsfield founded the airport in 1925 Jackson was 1st African American mayor of a major southern city

6 Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport
Importance to economy: Brings in business travelers Transports goods Largest employer in Georgia with over 55,000 employees

7 Deepwater Ports Managed by Georgia Ports Authority (GPA)
Two major ports: Savannah Brunswick Importance to economy: opens up Georgia for trade with the world

8 Savannah Port Includes 2 terminals (place where ship can be loaded or unloaded) Garden City terminal: handles general cargo from around the world Ocean terminal: handles automobiles and wheeled equipment

9 Brunswick Port Includes 3 terminals: Mayor’s Point: general cargo
Colonel’s Island: automobiles and dry bulk commodities Marine Port: handles bulk and general goods

10 River Transportation System
Two terminals Bainbridge Inland Barge Terminal: on the Flint River. Handles all kinds of goods and lets these goods move down river, into the oceans and across the world Columbus Inland Barge Terminal: on the Chattahoochee. It handles liquid commodities like crude oil and petroleum products.
