First they had to fly to Germany. They flew on a big air liner, just like people do when they go on vacation to far a way places. Here is Flat Stanley on the flight deck with the first officer. The officer is wearing his airline uniform and Stanley is wearing a flight suit. The flight suit is an air force pilot’s uniform.

It is hard work flying a plane. You have to study hard to learn all the buttons, levers, and dials. See the switches at Stanley’s feet that are marked “Engine one and engine two? Those are like the ignition in your car. They turn on the airplane engines. These commercial planes usually have three pilots- the First Officer, Second Officer, and flight engineer. There are so many buttons it take three people to push them all! I’m glad they had Stanley to help them!

Saving the world is a tough job. Stanley spent his whole day telling planes when to take off and where to fly. He even helped the ground crew fill the planes with gas and supplies and keep the planes clean and fixed. Now he is ready for a good night’s sleep- but wait, I mean a good day’s-sleep, because the airman often have to work all night and sleep a little during the day! At least it looks like that pillow is soft! Good night, Stanley!
