FLASH CARD REVIEW: Cell Basics

What is the definition of a cell? The basic unit of life.

What are the 2 types of cells? Prokaryote Eukaryote

What does Prokaryotic mean? Without a true nucleus.

What is a Prokaryote? An organism without a true nucleus. Bacteria are an example.

What does Eukaryotic mean? With a true nucleus.

What is a Eukaryote? An organism with a true nucleus. Plants and Animals are made of eukaryotic cells.

What is Endosymbiosis ? The process of a larger organism engulfing a smaller organism. The 2 organisms then live together in a relationship where they both help each other out.

What does the Endosymbiotic Theory explain? The origin of Eukaryotic Cells. Mitochondria & Chlorolasts were once free-living prokaryotes that were ingested by larger prokaryotes. Mitochondria & Chloroplasts lived inside the other cells: Mitochondria & Chloroplasts produced sugar/ATP, and the larger cells provided food and protection.
