Key terms bitumen Mineral pitch; a black, tarry substance. El Tajin El Tajín is a pre-Columbian archeological site and one of the largest and most important cities of the Classic era of Mesoamerica. This city was established and occupied by the Veracruz culture from 600 to 1200 CE. Maya blue Maya Blue (Azul Maya) is a unique bright azure blue pigment manufactured by cultures of pre-Columbian Mesoamerica, such as the Maya and Aztec. Mesoamerican ballgame The Mesoamerican ballgame was a sport with ritual associations played since 1,400 BCE by the pre- Columbian peoples of Ancient Mexico and Central America. A modern version of the game, ulama, is still played in a few places by the local indigenous population. The game had important ritual aspects, and major formal ballgames were held as ritual events, often featuring human sacrifice. metallurgy The science of metals; their extraction from ores, purification and alloying, heat treatment, and working. Mixtec A Mesoamerican people who lived in southern Mexico before the rise of the Aztecs. Mixtec Codices This pictorial style of writing originated during the Post-Classic period in Mesoamerican history and includes records of genealogy, historic events, and myths. Olmec Ancient pre-Columbian people living in the tropical lowlands of south-central Mexico, in what are roughly the modern- day states of Veracruz and Tabasco.
