PED 317 Chapter 2
2
Three energy sources: Glycolysis – Breakdown of glucose Glycogenesis – Glucose is broken into glycogen and stored in the muscles Glycogenolysis-Muscle glycogen is taken out of storage (muscle) and converted back into glucose so it may be used as an energy source
3
Catabolism – Enzyme reaction which causes something to be “broken down” Anabolism – Enzyme reaction which causes something to be “built or constructed” Coupled Reaction – The breakdown of one compound provides energy for building another compound Oxidation Reactions – Donating electrons Reduction Reactions – Accepting Electrons
4
At rest, the body uses carbohydrates and fats for energy. Protein provides little energy for cellular activity, but serves as building blocks for the body's tissues. During mild to severe muscular effort, the body relies mostly on carbohydrate for fuel.

Immediate Energy System (1 sec 10 sec) Anaerobic Energy System (10 sec – 2 min) Aerobic Energy System (2 min & beyond)
