Counterarguments  A counterargument (or counterclaim or rebuttal) is what someone might say against your argument.  It is important to give a counterargument so the audience knows you have really thought about your opinion.  It makes people more likely to believe what you say.  You MUST start a counterargument with a transition (like “Others might argue that…”). Otherwise, it will sound like you’re arguing against yourself.

Come-Back  When you mention a counterargument, you must have a come-back.  A come-back says, “I know people might say ____________________, but (my opinion) is still better because __________________________.”

Your mission!  Choosing a topic:  You are going to be researching a local issue from one of the following websites – 1. Cherokee Tribune Cherokee Tribune 2. Cherokee Ledger Cherokee Ledger 3. Canton-Sixes Patch Canton-Sixes Patch  You must get permission from Ms. White to finalize your article once you have selected one.  With the article, you are going to be writing a 3 paragraph/3 slide argumentative/persuasive essay based on the issue.  You will need to write the topic/ issue you choose as the title of your paper.

Organization  Your first paragraph will state the problem or state the issue  Your second paragraph will offer the solution  Your third paragraph will be a counterclaim (*review counterclaim slide for definition)  You will be using information that you have gathered from your article and citing that information in your essay.  We will work together to review citing and practice paraphrasing.  Let’s start by looking at a sample problem paragraph.

Example: Stating the Issue  Title: Georgia's Winter 2015-16 Forecast: Wet With Severe Storms  Do you know who El Nino is? No, he is not a terrifying villain on a telenovela. Instead, he is a gulf coast wind that bring heavy rains, and he just might be bringing that rain to Canton, GA. According to Accuweather’s 2015-16 forecast, “it’s likely that heavy rainfall and severe weather will take aim at the Southeast and Gulf Coast” (qt. Darnell). This rain could present problems, such as flooding and severe weather leading to downed trees and power outages. These problems are incredibly serious, but people could lessen the impact by preparing for the storms.  http://patch.com/georgia/canton-ga/georgias-winter- 2015-16-forecast-wet-severe-storms http://patch.com/georgia/canton-ga/georgias-winter- 2015-16-forecast-wet-severe-storms
