Employability Skills….. What and Why?

Employability Skills / Skills You Need for a Job Most people move across different employment sectors through their working life. We all need to be flexible in our working patterns. Thus need a set of 'transferable skills' – skills that are not specific to one particular career path but are generic across all employment

What Skills Are Employers Looking For? Employers are often looking for skills that go beyond qualifications and experience.

What are Employability Skills? Employability skills are those skills necessary for getting, keeping and being successful in a job.

Important Skills Interpersonal Skills: Interpersonal skills are vital when seeking employment and may be the single most important factor for many recruiters. Communication Skills: Employers look for people who communicate well both verbally and in writing. Critical Thinking Skills : The ability to solve problems and make decisions can be a huge asset to your employer and are therefore these are desirable skills to develop. Personal Development: Personal development is all about having the right attitude towards work and the organisation you work for. Employers look for people who are keen to develop and learn.

Presentation Skills : Presenting information clearly and effectively is a key skill in the work place and presentation skills are required in almost every modern employment area. Leadership: Leadership is the ability to influence others toward the achievement of a goal. Numeracy: Numeracy involves an understanding of numerical data, statistics and graphs, it is also part of making decisions and reasoning. IT Skills: Acquiring basic IT skills and being familiar with using a computer may open up a wide range of employment opportunities and increase your marketability in the workplace.

Module Briefing This module prepares students for employability and includes ‘people’ skills – team working, – delivering presentations, – client relationships and attending meetings – and ‘environmental’ issues – (health and safety, business ethics)

Module Aim Prepare students for employability and context building for subject. Enable students to conduct critical self-analysis and reflection and develop a range of employability skills. Develop appropriate skills needed by graduates to compete in the labor market. Develop skills in research, communication, presentation, taking initiative and working in teams. Develop reflective learning and action planning

Personal Development Plan This reflection forms a part of the personal development process with which you are engaged as a student. Each student should independently and individually produce a self-reflective learning account in relation to the module. This should be in three parts consisting: – The individual’s personal experiences of working within the team. – An assessment of what has been learnt from the module ( Skills, Attributes and Knowledge) – Personal statement. (Summarizing your progress, reflecting on your achievements and planning for the future

Component-2: Group Exercise A Descriptive Study of Networking and I T Security Organizations. Work in a group of 5 (exceptional cases – 6). Choose an organization and conduct the study. Report format and detail procedures to conduct the study to be discussed later.

Objectives of the Group Report To help you (the students) understand the existing scenarios in Networking and IT Security Industry To familiarize you with business organizations to relate theory with practice To familiarize you with organization structure and its functioning To familiarize you with different departments in the organization and their functions To develop researching instincts among students
