Dec 7, 1941—Japan attacks Pearl Harbor…to get the oil of DEI Dec 8—attacks on Malaya/drive on Singapore Dec 10—initial attacks on PI Dec 15—attacks in DEI Early 1942—US organizes Pacific defenses -theater organized along service lines -reinforcements sent to hold key points (8 divs, 2 carriers, etc) -carriers begin hit and run raids against Japanese strongpoints -April 18, Doolittle Raid against Tokyo Japanese fear for safety of emperor/push defensive barrier further westward and south --May, Operation MO—against Port Moresby, turned back at Coral Sea --June, Operation MI—against Midway, defeated at Midway US has gained the initiative??? Task: Divide into 3 groups Analyze the Guadalcanal ‘Campaign’ from August-October 1942, using the Joint Elements of Operational Design (JP 5-0 Ch. III) --analyze the whole of the campaign for the prescribed dates, using Ghormley as the JTF/Operational Artist --each group will also have a particular focus -air -sea -land --also look at what was done ‘right’; what was done ‘wrong’

Key lessons learned for the operational planner? --What is the JTF commander’s job? Getting everybody on the same sheet, need clear commander’s intent --rehearsals important…ironing out the rough spots --distance affects C2… --the inherent difficulty in Joint ops? Shared understanding? --anticipating and managing transitions; where are the branches and sequels? --mass can be sacrificed to maintain pressure against the enemy; spreading them thin…
