Engineering Fundamentals 152 Section A2

The Engineering Fundamentalist  Cameron Declerk  Travis Vaughn  Tom Singleton  Ryan Hodges  Michael Ewing

Design Overview.. Wanted to make it small and simple 6” by 2.5” box Used plexiglass, 36 gauge magnet wire, Styrofoam cups, wooden rod, magnets, used air wick bottle. Only cost roughly twelve dollars

Design Aspects Electrical Aspects o The turning of the magnets to produce a charge in the wire o Lighting of the light bulb from the charge Mechanical Aspects o The cups harnessing the wind from the fan to turn the wooden rod. o Small box and wooden rod so that it turns faster and is more efficient

Calculations  P in =.5 (p)(A)(V 3 )  p= Air density  A = Rotor Area  V = Wind speed  P = 10.7 Watts  P out = P light bulb  Efficiency = P out / P in  Eff = 9.3%

Design and Construction issues  To big of a box  Using a nail instead of wooden rod at first so magnets would not stay on  Not enough wire initially  Cups coming off from to much wind

Conclusion  Working as a team we took our given objective and thought of a solution to harness the wind successfully.  Learned from our mistakes  Took everyone’s ideas into consideration  Nothing is 100% efficient or guaranteed!
