A Just Right Book How Do I Know? Help!!!

Too Easy You have read the book a lot. You understand the story very well. You know all or almost all the words. You can read it smoothly.

Too Hard There are more than 5 words per page you don’t know. Does the story confuse you? Do you have trouble telling someone what it is about? When you read, does it sound choppy?

A Just Right Book New book You can understand most of it. There are just a few words per page you struggle with When you read, some places are smooth and other places may be choppy It is interesting to you!

Why Read Just Right Books? To practice strategies you use when you come to an unknown word To use context clues to figure out vocabulary To practice reading fluently To read a story you can understand To grow as a reader

When You Look For a Book Remember… Find a book that looks interesting and look at the title, cover, and flip through the book. Read the first page and try the 5 finger rule. Read a few more pages and tell yourself or a friend what is happening in the story.
