What is a macromolecule? There are four main types of biological molecules called macromolecules. The four types of macromolecules are carbohydrates, lipids, nucleic acids, and proteins.

Cells manufacture macromolecules by joining smaller molecules (monomers) together. Molecules linked together are called polymers. Macromolecules

All proteins are made from just 20 different monomers called amino acids.

Nucleic acids (RNA and DNA) are made of 5 different monomers called nucleotides.

Lipids (fats) are formed from smaller molecules but are not considered polymers.

Carbohydrates are made of monomers of ringed sugar molecules.
