Thursday – September 1, 2011 “ IN ” What did you eat for breakfast? What are the important substances in the food? Why? What do they do for our bodies? Objective: By creating a concept map and completing a lab activity, I will be able to compare the structures and functions of different types of biomolecules. “ OUT ” Message Board: Projects due tomorrow!! Quiz tomorrow!!! Turn in all missing work!

What we will do today 4 Concept Map of Biomolecules 4 Biomolecule Lab (ON TABLE!)
6
Carbohydrates, Proteins, Lipids, Nucleic Acids Here we go…
7
Carbohydrates 4 Macromolecules: –Starch –Glycogen (animal starch) –Cellulose (fiber) 4 Subunit: –Glucose –(fructose & galactose are other monosaccharide simple sugars)
8
Disaccharides (double sugars) 4 Maltose – in grains (glucose, glucose) 4 Lactose – in milk (glucose, galactose) 4 Sucrose – table sugar (glucose, fructose) Extra slide – not mandatory according to CSCOPE
9
Carbohydrates 4 Good for: –Providing energy –Composition of cell wall –Providing structural support
10
Lipids 4 Macromolecules: –Fats and phospholipids (play in “phospho” as phosphorus…abundant element from Tuesday) 4 Subunit: –Glycerol, fatty acids and phosphate groups 4 Good for: –Long term energy storage –Insulation –Protective covering (cell membrane)
11
Proteins 4 Composed of C,H,O,N 4 Macromolecules –Globular protein –Structural protein 4 Subunit –Amino acid
12
Proteins con’d 4 Good for: –Used as building blocks –Enzymes (Act as catalysts to speed up chemical reactions)
13
Nucleic Acids 4 Macromolecules: –DNA & RNA 4 Subunits: –Nucleotides (sugar, phosphate, nitrogen base) 4 Good for: –Storing information –Gene encoding –Gene expression
