CRCT Practice September 16, 2013 Leaf cells use chlorophyll to absorb A.Oxygen B.Light energy C.Carbon dioxide D.glucose
2
NOTES, September 16, 2013 Atoms are the smallest particle of all matter. Elements are a type of matter where all the atoms are the same. Elements can not be broken down. Example: hydrogen or oxygen A compound is when two or more elements are chemically combined. Example: 6H₂O A molecule is the smallest part of a compound. H₂O
3
Four large molecules that support cell function: 1.Carbohydrates-give energy 2.Lipids-fats, oils, waxes found in living things 3.Proteins-made of amino acids; enzymes are types of proteins that control chemical reactions
4
4. Nucleic Acids-molecules that hold the instructions for the maintenance, growth, and reproduction of a cell (DNA and RNA)
5
34. Organic compounds-compounds found in all living things in nature. Only living(or once living) organisms can contain organic compounds. Hint: look for the element carbon (C ) 35. Inorganic compounds-compounds found in all nonliving things in nature.
7
CRCT Practice September 17, 2013 The cells of a redwood tree require oxygen for the process of A.Photosynthesis B.Cellular respiration C.Fermentation D.Binary fission
8
Notes, Cells must: Get materials they need into the cell Get rid of waste products in the cell Have chemical reactions in the cell
9
Vocabulary 36. homeostasis- “balanced”; the number of molecules inside a cell are the same as the number of molecules outside the cell 37. diffusion-the movement of molecules across a cell membrane(in or out of cell)
10
38. osmosis- a type of diffusion; moves ONLY water molecules across the cell membrane 39. active transport-the movement of molecules in or out of a cell when the cell uses energy
11
40. passive transport-the movement of molecules in or out of a cell WITHOUT the cell using energy (diffusion and osmosis)
12
Reading pages 56-60; guided reading
14
CRCT Practice September 18, 2013 Both a whale and a seaweed use which of the following to change glucose into energy? A.Water B.Photosynthesis C.Cellular respiration D.Bonding
15
Notes 9/18/13 Chemical energy is provided to all cells as glucose. Water is needed for all chemical reactions in a cell. Osmosis is a special type of diffusion. Osmosis only moves water molecules in and out of a cell. This is because cells need so much water. (passive)
16
Diffusion is a type of passive transport that moves molecules in or out of cell ( carbon dioxide, oxygen…) Active transport moves molecules but Must use some the cell’s energy to do This. Salt moves across a cell’s membrane this way.
17
Diffusion of carbon dioxide
19
Osmosis- WATER ONLY
21
CRCT Practice September 19, 2013 The process by which water moves across a cell membrane is A.Diffusion B.Active transport C.Osmosis D.Facilitated diffusion
23
CRCT Practice September 20, 2013 The cell organelle where photosynthesis takes place is the A.Cytoplasm B.Chlorophyll C.Cell membrane D.Chloroplast

4 (A)3 (B)2 (C)1(F)Points DataThe data is presented for every day in a clear, precise form The data is presented for four of the five days in a clear, precise form The data is presented for two of the five days in a clear, precise form The data is presented for one of the five days in a clear, precise form 10 MeasurementThere are measurements for circumference with units for five days There are measurement s for circumferenc e with units for four days There are measurement s for circumferenc e with units for two days There are measurements for circumference with units for one day 10 DescriptionsThe egg’s overall appearance is described completely and clearly for all five days The egg’s overall appearance is described completely and clearly for four days The egg’s overall appearance is described completely and clearly for two days The egg’s overall appearance is described completely and clearly for one day 15

ExplanationsThe change in the egg’s circumference and appearance is fully explained for each day. The key terms osmosis, diffusion, homeostasis are used correctly and completely as part of the explanation. The change in the egg’s circumference and appearance is partially explained for each day. The key terms osmosis, diffusion, homeostasis are used The change in the egg’s circumference and appearance is fully explained for each day. Not all of the key terms osmosis, diffusion, homeostasis are used The change in the egg’s circumference are explained in incomplete thoughts. None of the key terms are used. 20 GrammarThe report is written using complete sentences, paragraph format. There are no spelling errors and no pronouns are used without antecedents. The introductory and concluding paragraphs are correct. The report is written using complete sentences, paragraph format. There are few spelling errors, and there are no pronouns used without an antecedent. The report is written using some incomplete sentences, and/or no paragraph format.
