2
What does conventions cover? Capitalization Punctuation Paragraphing Grammar and usage Spelling
3
KEY QUALITIES Checking spelling Punctuating effectively and paragraphing accurately Capitalizing correctly Applying grammar and usage
4
Why do students tend to struggle with this? Students count on the teacher to point out errors Students are surrounded by writing that is flawed -poorly (purposefully) spelled advertisements
5
Think about: Checking Spelling Have I used standard English spelling unless I chose not to for a good reason? Have I checked words with ie and ei When adding suffixes to words, have I changed y to I, doubled the final consonant, or dropped the silent e when necessary? Have I checked my work for words I have trouble spelling?
6
Helpful Trick… Read your work backwards! Why would this help? You focus more on the words themselves and not the ideas!
7
Think about: Punctuating effectively and paragraphing accurately Did I place quotation marks around dialogue and direct quotes? Did I punctuate complex sentences correctly? Did I use apostrophes to show possessives and contractions? Did I begin new paragraphs in the appropriate places?
8
Think about: Capitalizing Correctly Kid I capitalize proper nouns for people, places, and things? Did I capitalize dialogue correctly? Did I capitalized abbreviations, acronyms, and people’s titles correctly? Did I capitalize the title and/or other headings?
9
Fix this paragraph… on inauguration day we went to washington, d.c., and waited in the cold to see president obama and his family. “here he comes,” i cried with i spotted his presidential limousine round the southeast corner of pennsylvania avenue and head toward the national mall.
10
Think about: Applying Grammar and Usage Did I use special words such as homophones, synonyms, and antonyms correctly? Did I check my sentences for subject-verb agreement? Did I use verb tense (past, present, future) consistently throughout my piece? Did I make sure pronouns and their antecedents (the words they stand for) agree?
