2 A Faculty Club for UTMB May 2002 -- Proposal first presented to Faculty Senate for establishment of a Faculty Club Currently no site on campus for faculty to meet where professional, networking, collaborative, restorative and social interactions are fostered and encouraged Faculty Clubs active at many other health science campuses, including several in Texas

3 Benefits Encouragement and fostering collaboration among faculty from different departments and schools Improved faculty morale and congeniality Increased visibility for related organizations

4 Drawbacks Financial investment Space & remodeling needs Faculty “down time” Will it be used?

5 Potential sites 2 sites from several suggested: Old Red – old snack bar on ground floor Galveston Yacht Club

6 Would the faculty use a Club? Faculty Quality Committee survey Sampled the Faculty Senate, assuming they represent a cross- section of the faculty of UTMB Response from approximately 2/3

8 Results of survey Lunch and snacks preferred Beer and wine after 5 PM Non-institutional furnishings Majority would visit more than occasionally Less costly, the better

9 Progress.... Exactly one year ago (September 2002) committee tour of Old Red space July 2003 – Richard Moore reported: – Official project – Estimated time until completion 12 months

Architect retained by Facilities Planning Faculty to meet soon with architect and catering to review and refine design concepts (September) Refine design and capital budget cost (October) Initiate construction activities (November - March) Refine business plan and establish memberships (January - April) Start operations (April) Timeline is an estimate, of course!
