2. The Silk Road was… …a trade route from Europe to China and the Far East 3. The Silk Road ran through the Ottoman Empire. Why was this a problem for European monarchs?

Notes 3. The Ottoman Empire could control the trade of the Silk Road that ran through it’s Empire. This cost the European monarchs (Kings and Queens) money.

1. What are the three motivations for exploration? 1.To spread Christianity beyond Europe (God) 2. To expand their empires (Glory) 3. To become rich. (Gold)

2.Why did explorers want to find a sea route to Asia? They wanted to increase their power by trading silks and spices found in Asia.

3.In what direction did Spanish and Portuguese explorers sail? They sailed East around Africa or West across the Atlantic Ocean.

4. Identify and explain the route sought by English, French and Dutch explorers. They searched for a Northwest route to Asia called the Northwest Passage

5.Were the English, French, and Dutch explorer successful in finding this route? Why or why not? They were not successful in finding the Northwest Passage because frozen waters and many islands prevented them from achieving their goal.
