Sketch what the magnetic field looks like surrounding a bar magnet.

Magnetism Assignment ●Read Chapter 36 Intro - Section 4 ●Define magnetic poles, magnetic field, magnetic domains ●What is the main difference between electric charges and magnetic poles? ●What is a magnetic field a product of? (What causes a magnetic field to be present?) ●How can you make an ordinary piece of iron into an iron magnet?

What happens if we break a bar magnet into two pieces? Left with two complete magnets. Each contains a North and South pole. Difference between electric charges and magnetic poles? Electric charges can be isolated (positive or negative by itself). Magnetic poles cannot be isolated and always occur in pairs (North and South together).

Where do magnetic fields come from? Magnetic fields are the product of the movement of electric charges. The individual spin of electrons as well as their orbital motion around a nucleus create magnetic fields.

How does a compass react when placed in a magnetic field? A compass will align parallel with the magnetic field/field lines.

How to make iron into a magnet? Expose a piece of iron to a strong magnetic field that will cause the magnetic domains to align their poles creating a permanent magnet.

Homework Page ‘h’ of electromagnetism packet. #1-4 Page ‘i’ of electromagnetism packet. #11

Magnetic fields are created by ___________________________________. moving electric charges

Moving charge creates a magnetic field. A lot of moving charges = electrical current Current carrying wire creates a magnetic field

What happens when wire is made into a coil? ●Stronger magnetic field in center of coil. ●Magnetic field resembles that of a bar magnet.

Electromagnet (aka Solenoid) Magnet by which the magnetic field is produced by an electric current; usually in the form of a wire coiled around a piece of iron.

Increase the strength of magnetic field produced by electromagnet. ●More loops in coil ●Increased current To make an electromagnet ●Coiled conductor ●Source (provide potential difference→ current) ●Magnetic core (iron)

What does an electromagnet use to create a magnetic field? How is this different than a permanent magnet?

Moving charge creates?? A magnetic field What if we send a moving charge through another magnetic field? What do you think would happen? Charge will experience a deflecting force

What if we place a current carrying wire in a magnetic field? The charges in the wire feel a deflecting force, therefore the wire itself will feel a deflecting force.

Motors- What do they do? Convert electrical energy into kinetic energy

What 3 components are needed to create an electric motor? Source, conductor, magnet
