2 What are the expectations? Expectations for each year group Reception Children must be secure in Phase 3 phonics by the time they leave Reception, this includes reading & writing the sounds correctly independently. (See sheet) Year 1- Must be secure in Phase 5 by the end of the year. (See sheet) Year 2- Phase 6 & Spelling patterns

3 Magic ‘e’? We no longer use the term magic ‘e’. We encourage the children to learn the sounds a- e, e-e, i-e, o-u, u-e to read words & write them.

4 Phonics Lesson! Revisit sounds already learnt Teach new sound Practice new sound (reading & writing) Apply Now we are going to have a go!!

6 Year One Phonics test New statutory test that came in June 2012 Government have set pass mark at 32 out of 40 The test consists of 40 words to read. 20 are nonsense words and 20 are real words. Children that do not reach the required pass mark re-take the test again in the summer term of Year 2. Example words children have to read (also in pack)

7 Phonics Vocab Phoneme - the sound a letter makes Grapheme – the way to write a sound Diagraph – two letters making one sound Trigraph – three letters making one sound Prefix - set of letters added to the beginning of a word Suffix- set of letters added to the end of a word Blending – saying the sounds together to read a word Segmenting – breaking up the word into its sounds Consonant/ double consonant – all the letters apart from vowels. An example of double are ss, ll, ck, Vowel- short & long- a,e,i,o,u, ai, a-e etc
