Guidelines for using a colon Think of a colon as a gateway What comes before the colon must be an independent clause You should be able to replace the colon with "That is to say"? What comes after the colon is a further explanation of what comes before or a quotation that's been introduced or a list that's been introduced What comes after a colon can be independent OR dependent

What comes before and after must be an independent clause Look left and look right--are both sides independent? They need to be. The two halves must be related to each other.

Practice Sentences: write each sentence in your daybook and mark correct or incorrect and why. 1. Because we live in Michigan; we often have snow days. 2. Santa Clause is coming to town, I hope I get lots of gifts. 3. I want a number of items: snow shoes, a Kindle, and two hoodies.
