Training Objective Task: Conduct mission analysis of your duty position Condition: Given a class on each duty position, descriptions of the position’s roles and responsibilities in the White Book and elsewhere, and a class on mission analysis Standard: Complete the mission analysis worksheet for your duty position

3. Mission Analysis Analyze your higher headquarters mission and intent Identify your specified and implied tasks Identify your essential tasks Identify any constraints Restate your mission in a concise expression of the essential tasks to be accomplished and the purpose to be achieved

4. Specified and Implied Tasks A specified task is a task specifically assigned by higher headquarters – A student can consult the course syllabus and find a specified task to take a mid-term exam on a certain day An implied task is a task that must be performed to accomplish a specified task or mission but is not stated in the higher headquarters’ order – An implied task associated with taking that exam is to study for it

5. Essential Task An essential task is a specified or implied task that must be executed to accomplish the mission – Based on its assigned point value, it is likely that passing this exam is essential to the student’s accomplishing his overall mission to pass the course – Other tasks such as an individual reading assignment or an extra credit opportunity, while important, may not rise to this bar of being essential

6. Constraints A constraint is a restriction emplaced by a higher commander A constraint dictates an action or inaction, thus restricting the freedom of action of the subordinate – Constraints associated with the mid-term exam might include the amount of time the professor allows you to take the exam or the minimum or maximum length she requires of the answers

7. Mission Statement A mission statement is a short sentence or paragraph that describes the essential task (or tasks) and purpose. It usually contains the elements of who, what, when, where, and why, but seldom specifies how. – Cadet Jones (who) passes his mid-term exam (what) on 20 March (when) in Capers Hall Room 333 (where) in order to facilitate his passing the course (why).

Today’s Exercise The purpose of today’s exercise is to: – Write your higher headquarters’ mission and intent – Identify your specified tasks – Identify your implied tasks – Identify your essential task(s) – Identify your constraints – Write your mission statement You will do this on the worksheet, and turn it in to your supervisor for counseling and approval Your supervisor will turn the worksheet in to the 1SG who will turn all the worksheets in to the TAC

9. Moving Forward Remember we said that the mission statement seldom specifies the “how” As you move forward, you will develop courses of action for how you will accomplish your mission – Going back to our exam example, various concepts for how to prepare for the exam include completing the study guide, forming a study group, and meeting with your professor to get additional instruction In future training, you will begin working on the “how” part for your mission
