Definition of Irony A discrepancy or contrast between appearances or expectations and reality.

Verbal Irony Occurs when someone says one things but means something else.

Example of Verbal Irony Lisa missed her bus to school, dropped her textbook in a puddle of water, and had her cell phone stolen, all before 8:00 a.m. She said, “I’m have a wonderful day so far.”

Situational Irony Occurs when there is a discrepancy between what is expected to happen and what really happens.

Example of Situational Irony A soldier risks his life to get water and then spills all of it.

Dramatic Irony Occurs when a character in a play or story thinks one thing is true, but the audience or reader knows better.

Example of Dramatic Irony In the story, “The Cold Equation,” a young girl stows away on a spaceship thinking she will see her brother. The readers, however, know she must die.

Conclusion Careful readers can spot irony.
