5. Situational Irony Occurs when there is a discrepancy between what is expected to happen and what really happens.

6. Example of Situational Irony A soldier risks his life to get water and then spills all of it.

7. Dramatic Irony Occurs when a character in a play or story thinks one thing is true, but the audience or reader knows better.

8. Example of Dramatic Irony In the story, “The Cold Equation,” a young girl stows away on a spaceship thinking she will see her brother. The readers, however, know she must die.
