Aim #47: What are the stages of mitosis? Biology is the only subject in which multiplication is the same thing as division…
4
1) What is mitosis? Chromosomes Spindle Fibers Mitosis is the process that divides the cell’s nucleus into two, each with a complete set of genetic material from the parent cell.
5
What are the phases of the Cell Cycle? G1- Cells increase in size and synthesize new proteins and organelles. Cell
6
What are the phases of the Cell Cycle? S Phase- DNA (chromosomes) are replicated. Centromere Chromatid
7
What are the phases of the Cell Cycle? G2 Phase- Many of the molecules and organelles for cell division are produced. Centriole G1, S, and G2 Phases are collectively known as: Interphase
8
What are the phases of the Cell Cycle? M Phase- the cells undergo cell division. What does the “M” stands for? Mitosis The dance of the Chromosomes
9
Stages of Mitosis: Prophase: 1)The chromosomes become visible. (Condensation) 2)The centrioles separate and Spindle fibers begin to form. 3)The nuclear membrane breaks down. Centriole Spindle Fibers Nuclear Membrane
10
Stages of Mitosis: Metaphase: 1)The chromosomes line up across the center of the cell. 2)Each chromosome is connected to a spindle fiber at the centromere.
11
Stages of Mitosis: Anaphase: 1)The spindle fibers separate the chromatids into individual chromosomes and they are moved apart.
12
Stages of Mitosis: Telophase: 1)The chromosomes gather at opposite ends of the cell. 2) Two new nuclear membranes form. 3)The chromosomes lose their distinct shapes.
13
Cytokinesis: The cytoplasm pinches and two cells are formed.
14
What is the end result of Mitosis? 46X + Chromosome Number? ParentDaughter Cell Is the genetic material of the daughter cells identical to the parent? The same number of chromosomes is maintained from one generation to the next. YES

Which phase are these cells in? Prophase Anaphase

What phase are these cells in? Metaphase Telophase

9) Animal vs. Plant Cell Mitosis In plants, a Cell Plate forms across the middle of the cell.
