The Rights of Englishmen 1215 Magna Carta (Great Charter) King agreed he was not above the law. Had to obey laws of the land. Guaranteed civil liberties Property could not be seized Right to a trial if accused- jury people of same social rank Elect representatives to government (Parliament)

English Rights Threatened King James II- colonists lost representative assemblies Glorious Revolution- William & Mary become King/Queen England. English Bill of Rights- rights of English people No laws or taxes unless Parliament agreed Free elections No excessive fines or cruel punishments Could complain to king/queen w/out punishment Salutary neglect- England did not interfere with colonies- colonists got used to acting independently.
