1 The Rights of Englishmen  1215 Magna Carta (Great Charter) King agreed he was not above the law. Had to obey laws of the land.  Guaranteed civil liberties  Property could not be seized  Right to a trial if accused- jury people of same social rank  Elect representatives to government (Parliament)

2 English Rights Threatened  King James II- colonists lost representative assemblies  Glorious Revolution- William & Mary become King/Queen England.  English Bill of Rights- rights of English people  No laws or taxes unless Parliament agreed  Free elections  No excessive fines or cruel punishments  Could complain to king/queen w/out punishment  Salutary neglect- England did not interfere with colonies- colonists got used to acting independently.  John Peter Zenger- Freedom of the Press/Speech
