October 23, 1875 – March 23, 1946 American physical chemist Married Hylda Tafler for 53 years Had two sons He couldn’t support his family financially so he left them Personal Story
3
Idea of the Atom He believed that the atom was shaped of a cube and the corners represent the electrons Discovered more and more of chemical bonds He studied about special relativity and gained more knowledge on mathematical physics and study of space time Atomic model known as the Lewis Langmuir octet
4
Area Of Study Study of space-time National Academy of Sciences Harvard University at 15 Gilbert was the first scientist to produce heavy water, experimenting with double weight hydrogen atoms Worked with Ernest Lawrence in the invention of the cyclotron Atom-smashing experiments.
5
Major Scientific Contribution Gilbert Lewis is well known for the discovery of covalent bonds and purification of heavy water Thermodynamics - working with heat and mechanical energy He showed how to write formulas using dots to represent the electrons for example Example: O::C::O for carbon dioxide or H:Cl for hydrogen chloride.
