04/25/054 List of Definitions IDOT – Iowa Department of Transportation PSM – Problem and Solution Matrix IDE – Improved Driver Education
5
04/25/055 Acknowledgements Advisors: –John Lamont –Ralph Patterson III –Max Porter –Duane Smith Client: –Mark Bortle, Iowa Department of Transportation
6
04/25/056 Problem Definition There are 11 million crashes resulting in more than 5 million injuries and 40,000 deaths per year –Accidents due to weather and hazardous driving conditions –Accidents due to poor driving habits and distractions –Accidents due to mechanical failure and negligence
7
04/25/057 Proposed Solution Write a report for the IDOT detailing where information is lacking or not sufficient, including a set of solutions for known driving problems
8
04/25/058 Operating Environment Public education programs, grades K-12 Driver education Iowa Department of Transportation
9
04/25/059 Intended Users Government personnel Drivers Non-drivers Driver’s education
10
04/25/0510 Intended Uses Improve driver education –Early childhood education –High school driver’s education –Refresher courses –International and foreign education Bring awareness to problems with current driving situation
11
04/25/0511 Assumptions Proposed solutions will be evaluated by the IDOT Different types of problems will require different types of solutions Team members are qualified to define problems and solutions
12
04/25/0512 Limitations Limited amount of information can be gained from statistical research Designs must meet federal and state guidelines Final implementation and testing are outside the project’s scope
13
Project Activities
14
04/25/0514 End Product Comprehensive list of leading causes of car accidents and fatalities Defined list of problems with current driver’s education Proposed solutions to aid and improve driver education and testing
15
04/25/0515 End Product – (Cont.) Examples of proposed solutions –Awareness week –Bad weather alert system –Cell phone law –Driver information database –Elder driver restrictions –Safe driving video games –Vehicle enhancements
16
04/25/0516 Present Accomplishments Completed required senior design deliverables Designed research and proposal templates Composed list of problems (over 130) and solutions (over 80) Designed a problem and solution matrix Proposed 12 categorized project solutions
17
04/25/0517 Future Required Activities Processing feedback of the final report Submission of final product to client
18
04/25/0518 Approaches Considered and Used Considered –Presentation for client –Compose research documents –Write a comprehensive report Used –Comprehensive report ~ Follows the senior design itinerary, and allows for the most information to be presented to the IDOT
19
04/25/0519 Project Definition The purpose of this project is to create solutions that will improve driver education by: –Creating devices that will help to eliminate or reduce accidents –Providing enhanced refresher courses emphasizing current driving problems
20
04/25/0520 Research Activities First semester –List of defined problems –List of possible solutions to defined problems –Matrix correlating problems and solutions Second semester –Research on problems and solutions –Revisal of problems and solutions matrix
21
04/25/0521 Design Activities First semester –Designed outline of final report –Designed research and proposal templates Second semester –Designed final document
22
04/25/0522 Implementation Activities Analyze problems with the current driving system Define solutions and correlate them with problems Propose solutions for implementation by IDOT or future senior design teams
23
04/25/0523 Testing & Modifications Advisors reviews and feedback IDOT testing and review
24

Closing Material
33
04/25/0533 Recommendations for Future Work Further research on topics Further testing and evaluation of proposed solutions Implementation of solutions
34
04/25/0534 Lessons Learned What went well –Document organization –Final product What didn’t go well –Document editing Technical knowledge gained –Deriving lists of requirements –Proposing solutions to problems
35
04/25/0535 Risk & Risk Management Risks –Loss of team member –Loss of documentation –Fall behind schedule Management –Documentation! –Members required to back-up documents –Organization and meetings
36
04/25/0536 Closing Summary Revised current driver’s education Created document defining problems with current driving system Proposed solutions to better educate people to improve safe driving Hopefully this report will be used to reduce the number of accidents and save lives
