Through College Herbert George Wells Born: September 21, 1866 in Bromley, Kent, England He entered college in 1884 with a biology scholarship Wells studied under Thomas Henry Huxley, one of the great biology teachers of the time He graduated in 1888 It was during this time that Wells published two scientific textbooks

A Move to Science Fiction His first novel, The Time Machine, was published in 1895. It was written in response to Jules Verne’s style of writing. The book was so successful that Wells never had to worry about money again.

Writing Variety Other Science Fiction Works Include: The Island of Dr. Moreau The Invisible Man The War of the Worlds and many more He also wrote many short stories, mainstream (realistic) fiction, non-fiction essays, and history books

A Man with A Mission Most of Wells’ books focused on the causes he supported. These include, but are not limited to: Nationalism Socialism Feminism Evolutionism The advancement of science

WWII and the End During the air raids of London during WWII, Wells refused to leave for safety It was his “stubbornness” that helped to influence others, such as members of the Royal Family, to stay in London as well. Wells died of natural causes in London on August 13, 1946.

Father of Modern Science Fiction Many of Wells’ ideas, inventions, and theories from his science fiction works have come true over the years. His books foresaw super highways, overcrowded cities, computers, VCRs, televisions, tanks, military use of airplanes, and the atomic bomb
