The first cells were prokaryotes Prokaryotic is from the Greek pro, meaning “before,” and karyon, meaning “kernel,” referring to the nucleus. They lack membrane-enclosed organelles. Possess very simple internal structure Generally smaller than eukaryotic cells Bacteria and Mycoplasmas are prokaryotes The do possess ribosomes
