TASK: Create a Yalta and Potsdam ‘guide for dummies’ This is a topic which can be confusing for students. It is easy to get muddled on who was present at each conference and what was agreed. As a result, you need to create a simple guide to these two conferences which started to see a breakdown in the alliance between the USA and USSR in 1945. It would be best to present this as a leaflet and can be done by hand or using ICT. Your leaflet should contain: Dates – when did the conferences take place? Locations – where did they take place? Attendance – what leaders were present? Agreements – what was decided? Disagreements/Tension – what did they fall out about? What caused problems? TASK: Design a piece of American propaganda to promote the Marshall Plan to countries in Europe. America were concerned about the Soviet takeover of Eastern Europe. They saw the spread of communism as a virus that needed to be contained. As a result, they introduced the Marshall Plan in 1947 to provided economic assistance to countries in Europe to help them rebuild after the war. Your piece of propaganda could take the form of a poster, but it could also be a speech or leaflet. As always, you should use your contextual knowledge and further research to point out: How much money is being offered Where this idea came from Why this money is being offered Why countries should accept it – what is the benefit to them? 6. Key Question 2: Who won the Cuban Missile Crisis? Focus Point: Why did Khrushchev put missiles on to Cuba? TASK: Interview Khrushchev – paired task In pairs, you need to prepare a short interview scene between an American journalist and Premier Khrushchev, dated Monday 15 th October 1962. This needs to be fully scripted. A selection of groups will be asked to perform their scenes to the rest of the class. We will not have time for everyone, but you will need to be prepared. You will have to come up with both the questions and the responses, however, the purpose of the interview is to find out why Khrushchev has decided to put nuclear missiles on to Cuba. His responses should be thoroughly explained and historically accurate. The interview is on the day following the discovery of missiles by the U2 spy plane. Your scene should last for a maximum of 5 minutes. You don’t have to be limited to just asking questions about the reasons Khrushchev has for putting missiles on Cuba. You many want to ask him about the Cold War in general (Containment). You may want to ask him other things about Cuba (Revolution, Bay of Pigs, Castro). You may want to ask him about JFK. TASK: Write a newspaper article for either the USA or USSR claiming to have won the Cuban Missile Crisis. Both Khrushchev and Kennedy claimed to have won the CMC. Khrushchev was seen as a peacemaker, Kennedy was seen as strong in the face of communist aggression. You will need to investigate the consequences of the missile crisis. Choose to write for either Soviet newspaper ‘PRAVDA’ or US newspaper ‘THE NEW YORK TIMES’. Explain using precise and relevant contextual knowledge why your country was victorious. DO back up what you say with evidence DO think about where the CMC fits in to broader picture of the Cold War – does it show ‘containment’ as a success? What might happen next?
