9. Preproduction As in writing, there is a process to follow when creating a podcast Be sure to consider the PURPOSE of the podcast is it to teach, review, entertain? Who is the AUDIENCE? younger students, people who already know a lot about this topic, people who are just learning? How LONG should it be? generally speaking, unless it’s an entire lecture, 5-10 minutes works well Who will do each piece? you could have the writer/editor, recorder, sound effects have students take turns at the various roles Practice - a lot! The more you practice, the better your product will be.

10. Production When you’re ready to record (after all that practicing!) you have some options. You could use: built-in microphone - many computers have these headsets with microphones - cost about $50 and help to cut down on background noise GarageBand (Mac) or Audacity (PC) - these 2 software applications let you record and share your podcast record short portions at a time - that way, it’s easier to find mistakes and fix them

11. Postproduction At this point, you want to make sure that everything is in order and ready to share edit - check for audio that shouldn’t be included make sure images line up with audio arrange clips correctly - rearrange, if necessary, to be sure everything is in the correct order trim clips - if they’re too long and be sure there are no dead spots add music and sound effects - when working with students, it’s important to leave this to the end! Content comes first. publish or share in some way

12. Publish There are a variety of ways to publish, or share, your product. You could: Save it to a jump drive Send it as an email attachment Burn to a CD or DVD Export (share) to iTunes Export to a school web site, blog or wiki Here’s an example of a classroom website including student podcasts: Awbrey ParkAwbrey Park
