Matsumoto’s definition:  A dynamic system of rules established by groups in order to ensure their survival involving:  Attitudes  Values  Beliefs  Norms  Behaviors  Dynamic: always changing  Systematic: entire system of rules for how things are done  Groups: across individuals within groups AND across groups  Ensuring survival: peaceful co-existence, social order & balance b/w individual and group needs

6  Cultural norms: behavior patterns that are typical of specific groups  Observational learning from gatekeepers in our culture…passed down from generation to generation.  Cultural dimensions: perspectives of a culture based on values and cultural norms  Continuum/spectrum  Hoefstede (1973) & (1984)  Trends among surveys distributed to IBM employees from 40 countries around the world
