Shows a number of ancient influences Etruscans live in Italy before arrival of the Romans Heavily influenced Romans, language & customs different Much of what we know comes from tombs (Necropoli) Entire families w/servants buried in one tomb Tombs inspired by Greek buildings, pediments & columns, cella behind porch. Sculptures placed on roof to announce presence of deity within. ETRUSCAN ART

Legend tells us when Numitor, grandfather of twins Romulus and Remus was overthrown by his brother Amulius, the usurper ordered the twins be cast into the Tiber river. They were rescued by a she-wolf who cared for them. They grew to be natural leaders, brought Numitor back to power and chose to found a new city, Rome. CAPITOLINE WOLF “THE FOUNDING OF ROME”

Characterized by a pantheon of gods celebrated in large civic & religious buildings. Architecture has a large public element and is influenced by Etruscan & Greek models. Master builders, they understood the possibilities of the arch. Greek architecture is a strong influence, temples fronted by columns and pediments. ROMAN ART Roman art was revived with an 18 th C interest in Roman Laws, government & philosophy 4 periods: Republican, Early Imperial, Late Imperial, Late Antique.
