Department of Peacekeeping Operations (DPKO) “Work to create the conditions fro lasting peace in countries torn by conflict” Provide security, political and peace building support to help countries make transition from conflict to peace

Peacekeeping is guided by 3 basic principle: 1)Consent of the parties 2)Impartiality 3)Non-use of force except in self-defence and defence of the mandate (orders)

Maintain peace and security Facilitate political process (democracy) Protect civilians Disarmament Support elections (democracy again) Protect/promote human rights 120 countries involved Partner with European Union and African Union War against War Currently there are 16 UN Peacekeeping missions on 4 continents:

A few other things peacekeepers do: Conflict prevention and mediation Peacemaking Peace enforcement Peace building

The Security council responds to crisis around the World on case by case basis Established a peace keeping operation by adopting a security council resolution. The resolution sets out the missions mandate and size Peacekeeping and the UN Security Council:

5 permanent members of the UN SC USA Russia China United Kingdom France 10 non-permanent members are elected for 2 year terms
