What do you think would be a good plan for reconstruction? How are you going to get the North and the South to come together again? Write down at least 3 “lines” to answer these questions. You may work with the person next to you to come up with this plan.

The North returned to relative normalcy The South faced very different situation… Land, buildings, cities, homes, RR’s were destroyed Freedmen- former slaves were now set free 13 th Amendment- ended slavery

Lincoln had been preparing for this Re-Union of the United States. His plan was known as Reconstruction The rebuilding of former Confederate States and reuniting the nation.

Post Civil War left mass devastation in the South. Shattered Southern economy. Millions of newly emancipated slaves jobless and homeless.

1. The class will be broken up into 2 groups. 2. You will be designated “Old South” or “New South”. 3. With your groups, brainstorm what life would have been like in your group after the Civil War.

-Majority of white men must swear loyalty to the Union before being admitted. -Must ratify the 13 th Amendment- abolish slavery -Former Confederate officials may vote and hold office.

-Radical Republican Plan- didn’t think any plans were harsh enough. Must disband state governments Must write new constitutions Must ratify the 14 th Amendment African American men must be able to vote.
