Physics Concept and Arkansas State Standard Our lesson was focused on teaching the students what ferromagnetic and non- ferromagnetic materials were. We based our lesson off of the Scientist Ideas M2 from chapter 3: “A magnet will always attract a nearby ferromagnetic object. Ferromagnetic objects include iron, nickel and cobalt. Other metals, as well as non-metals, will not interact with a magnet.” This corresponds with Arkansas state standard PS.7.3.4: Differentiate between magnets and non-magnets. The PET pedagogy is designed to enable students to develop physics ideas in ways consistent with how science knowledge is developed in a scientific community and with our understanding of how people learn: Using prior knowledge to develop hypotheses about new phenomena; Testing initial ideas with experiments; Using this evidence and logical reasoning to suggest viable ideas; and Engaging in collaboration and consensus to agree on a set of evidence- based ideas.

Observations with Magnets and Materials Materials Used:Attracted To Magnet? Aluminum Crayon Pencil Paper Clip Bobby pin Penny Washer To begin our lesson, we asked the children “What is a magnet? What types of materials are attracted to magnets?” Using the above table, we asked the students to vote on what materials would and would not attract to a magnet. After tallying the votes, students were put into groups to conduct their own experiments with a magnet and the above materials noted. After the students completed their observations, we brought the students together to discuss their observations and compare them with the predictions that were conducted earlier in the lesson.
