Workshop on Hyperspectal Meteorological Science of UW-MURI and Beyond 14–15 May 2002, Madison, Wisconsin Progress Reports: The UW & UH Co-Is NWP in support of Simulating GIFTS data IOMI/GIFTS Retrievals “Clear Sky” RTE Development Aerosols & Dust Atmospheric Parameters UW–CIMSS: UH–HIGP: AHI field experiments & hyperspectral model development – More from P. Lucey

Workshop on Hyperspectal Meteorological Science of UW-MURI and Beyond 14–15 May 2002, Madison, Wisconsin New Science Applications Science Use of GIFTS Data: “End-to-End” Simulating GIFTS data Fast Model development Information Content First Retrievals (T, q, wind) “GVision”/ IHOP_2002 Data Assimilation Studies Estimating Visibility Cloud Properties Dust & Aerosol Retrievals 0 5095 6.2 6.4 Estimating Turbulence UW-MURI

Workshop on Hyperspectal Meteorological Science of UW-MURI and Beyond 14–15 May 2002, Madison, Wisconsin NWP in Support of Simulating GIFTS data Recent NWP Work: Work to produce a total of 6 unique GIFTS data “cube” sets in support of GIFTS simulation studies and RTE development. Daily IHOP_2002 single “cube” MM5 simulations. Implementation of PSU/NCAR MM5 as a second “cloud resolving” model for GIFTS “cube” creation. Gained knowledge on how to effectively utilize distributed memory computer facilities for maximizing NWP support of UW-MURI.

Workshop on Hyperspectal Meteorological Science of UW-MURI and Beyond 14–15 May 2002, Madison, Wisconsin The Physical retrieval model has been developed Two fast ways for Jacobian calculation are developed Contrast between surface skin temperature and surface air temperature on boundary layer moisture Simulation studies using cube data from MM5 Recent Retrieval Work: IOMI/GIFTS Retrievals

Workshop on Hyperspectal Meteorological Science of UW-MURI and Beyond 14–15 May 2002, Madison, Wisconsin Recent Clear Sky RTE Work: – 8-12μm H 2 O line parameters – 8-12μm H 2 O self-broadened continuum – 15μm and 4.3μm CO 2 lineshape Line-by-Line Improvements: Fast Model Parameterization: Laser design change 852nm => 1064nm HITRAN ‘96/JPL extended => updated HITRAN 2000 Generalized interferograms deapodization fix Extend SZA range to 70° Re-making GIFTS fast model with new software, greater flexibility. End-to-end testing. Characterization of existing fast model’s statistical accuracy. “Clear Sky” RTE Development

Workshop on Hyperspectal Meteorological Science of UW-MURI and Beyond 14–15 May 2002, Madison, Wisconsin Aerosols & Dust Recent Aerosol & Dust Work: Performing trade studies to determine the accuracy of the existing fast models. Determine ways to improve the existing models. Initiated new subcontract of UW-MURI with I. Sokolik at the University of Colorado-Boulder.

Workshop on Hyperspectal Meteorological Science of UW-MURI and Beyond 14–15 May 2002, Madison, Wisconsin Atmospheric Parameters Recent Atmospheric Parameter Work: Implementation of stability procedures used with AERI data on simulated GIFTS retrievals of temperature and moisture. New research on quantifying atmospheric turbulence as measured with hyperspectral data (e.g., AERI). Development of initial software infrastructure (VisAD) for “Gvision” as a tool for analyzing many data sets toward the evaluation of : – Aerosol and dust profiles – Slantwise visibility

Workshop on Hyperspectal Meteorological Science of UW-MURI and Beyond 14–15 May 2002, Madison, Wisconsin Status The UW & UH MURI is a healthy research collaboration, especially when considering the new subcontracts. We are well underway on our proposed Year 1 and Year 2 tasks, and with respect to Product Research we are progressing well. We are progressing on many fronts, from RTE development to atmospheric/surface parameter retrievals. Year 2 will see more time spent using the simulated GIFTS data than generating it.
