24 How do you measure the brightness of a star?

25 Magnitude—3 definitions  Measurement system invented by Greeks around 150 B.C. used to measure brightness of stars.  A star that is one magnitude number lower than another star is about two-and- a-half times brighter. 1 is the brightest, 6 the dimmest.  The full moon is a magnitude of -12.6!

26 Why ‘Magnitude’? Root: Magn-  The word is from Latin magnus meaning ‘great/big’!  We usually use it to refer to large or very important things.  Magnitude 2. You can’t say something is “magnitude.” It is of great magnitude, has magnitude, or someone can have magnitude.”

31 HOW CAN WE FIX THIS!?  Simply complete the following simple steps and you will be on your way to perfecting your affect/effect usage!

32 1. Collect one piece of paper from the closest recycling bin.

33 2. Crumple the paper into a tight ball.

34 THROW THE PAPER!  SCREAM “Action!” as you do so.

35 How did you AFFECT the world around you?

36 What were the EFFECTS of this Action?

37 AFFECT  A  ACTION  The action you take to CHANGE something.  You can often replace the word ‘affect’ with ‘change’ in a sentence.

38 EFFECT  Note the ‘E’  THE RESULT—the end product of what has been done.  What the results of the action were.  You can often replace ‘effect’ with the word ‘result’ in a sentence.

39 In Summary:  Is it an action (verb)? Use an A.  Is it a noun? Or can you describe it as the result of an action? Use an E.

40 Try it:  Were you _ffected by the full moon last night?  She really likes motorcycling except for how the wind _ffects her hair.  Yeah, the _ffects of the wind look a bit like a giant cat licked her head.  I really like the special _ffects in the Lord of the Rings movies.  Do you think lavishing Mrs. Wicklund with compliments would _ffect my grade?  No, but I think the _ffects of you doing so would be nice anyway.
