REVISING PROCESS MODULE FIRST YEAR SERIES WRITING CENTER UNIVERSITY OF NORTH FLORIDA

WORKSHOP OVERVIEW  What revision is not  Define revision  Revise to  How to get started

WHAT REVISION IS NOT

DEFINE REVISION Revision again see “To see again”

REVISE TO  A – add  R – remove  M – move  S – substitute

REVISE TO  Content  Focus  Clarity  Explanation  Evidence  Flow  Within paragraphs  Between paragraphs

HOW TO GET STARTED  Walk away, then come back  Have a plan  Revisit the assignment sheet  Read all comments on your rough draft  Talk it out  Read aloud or be read to  Write (lots) more  Get physical: Print it out, annotate it, cut it up  Take breaks  Let it go  Rewrite – write again!

WORKSHOP SUMMARY  What revision is not  Define revision  Revise to  How to get started

GUIDED PRACTICE  Sample Reflection and Revision Plan Thank you all for your comments! I can see now, that this summary does not have a clear thesis, and reads like more of an outline than a summary, these are the things I am going to work on revising. I will start by rereading Gee and watching Tara’s video again. I think I missed Gee’s D/discourse distinction and this needs to be in my thesis. Also, I need to chunk the information in Gee so that I can focus on presenting his ideas versus giving everyone a tour of his work. This means I’ll have to rewrite a number of sentences.

ARTIFACT-BASED PRACTICE  Choose one of your summaries and write a Reflection and Revision Plan right now!
