Apollo’s guilt of being an ineffectual parent caused him to make a promise to Phaethon that he could not undo. He tells Phaethon that he would do anything to help him. Phaethon asks for the one thing that Apollo fears.

Evidence Example Apollo states, “Will you not withdraw your request- allow me to preserve my honor without destroying the earth?” (52).

Explain how it drives the conclusion
Apollo did not want to disappoint his son, but Phaethon would not withdrawal his request to drive the chariot. Phaethon’s chariot ride in the end destroys the Earth and leaves it forever changed.
