EurekAlert! Publicizing your work to a national audience
2
Why publicize your work? Elevate the institution’s reputation; show how it’s “Changing What’s Possible” Build your own reputation Help inform the public about cutting-edge science Help the public care more about science so that it will support science funding Enable philanthropic organizations to learn about your work
3
EurekAlert! is an online, global news service operated by AAAS, the science society. EurekAlert! provides a central place through which organizations engaged in research can bring their news to the media.

5
What can you post? Research News Science Business News Grants Meetings National Awards Books
6
Research News Post releases ahead of print embargoes or within 90 days after publication
7
Research News Post news releases ahead of print embargoes for access by 8,000 subscribed journalists Post news release within 90 days of publication of an article Publish science policy news with recommendations based on published research Post key conference presentations
8
What is a print embargo? Journalists cannot publish stories about an embargoed article until the date and time of the embargo have passed.
9
Why post to EurekAlert! ahead of embargo? Journalists can use the release to prepare their stories, which can then be released immediately after the embargo passes. Journalists like this because their story will be read more if it is timely. In our experience, releases timed with article publication or those that are posted to EurekAlert! ahead of embargo do well with views/media pickup. Example: Almost 15,000 views for press release about our role in NIH HIV antibody study, published on same day as article.
10
Releases with images or video do well

16
What this means for you Let the EurekAlert! Working Group know of an upcoming or recent high-impact publication or other news that you think merits a release Send details (i.e., publication date, copy of paper) to research- comm@musc.eduresearch- comm@musc.edu Provide a brief summary of MUSC’s role in paper. If an author has moved on to another institution, please note
17
Selection process The EurekAlert! Working Group will not be able to do all requested releases due to limited resources. As resource allows, we will create press releases for: Publications in the highest-impact journals, especially those that involve translational research and those for which MUSC researchers and MUSC Health clinicians played a seminal role Publication, grants, etc. that position our strengths as an institution (i.e., special expertise, special core) and show our collaboration with other leading academic medical centers Publications in specialties that are of strategic interest (e.g., USNWR rankings)
18
What happens if you are selected? › A writer will contact you to set up an interview. Make yourself available as early as possible for the interview. › The writer working on your release will send you a draft of the release. Promptly review, make changes, and/or approve the draft of release. Note that the release will be written in a media-friendly style (not too much jargon). › The writer may ask about available images to which you own copyright and that would be appropriate for a wider audience.
19
In addition, your release will be distributed via appropriate MUSC communication channels MUSC News Center (musc.edu/pr/newscenter/) (lay audience) Progressnotes, MUSC’s medical magazine (MUSChealth.org/pn) (physician audience) Stat, the blog for Progressnotes (http://www.muschealth.org/pn/STAT-A-Blog-for-Progressnotes) (physician audience)http://www.muschealth.org/pn/STAT-A-Blog-for-Progressnotes Research website (coming soon; lay audience) Departmental newsletters, as appropriate

Featured Experts Profiling MUSC expertise
21
Featured Experts MUSC can post as many as 100 experts who are willing to serve as a resource for the press when a story in their specialty comes out. As with releases, featured expert profiles help establish MUSC as a leading academic medical center. EurekAlert! Working Group will choose final 100 based on strategic priorities but is open to nomination via the research- comm@musc.edu email.research- comm@musc.edu
22
Media Training Media training for experts is available via My Quest. Visit myquest.musc.edu, click on “Enroll” at the top, and then select “Browse Catalog” and look for the “Media Training Resources” module. In addition to the MyQuest resources, on-campus media training facilitators are available. Please contact Heather Woolwine, director of media relations, MUSC or Deborah Reynolds, director of communications, College of Medicine to inquire or set up an appointment.
