Chapter 6 Bones
4
Hyoid Bone Located in the neck; between the mandible and larynx Supports and provides attachment sites for some tongue muscles
5
Vertebral Column aka Spine Composed of Vertebrae Protects the spinal cord Serves as a point of attachment for the ribs, pelvic girdle and the muscles of the back
6
Vertebral Column aka Spine Adult Spine contains 26 vertebrae 7 Cervical Vertebrae: Cervic = neck C1-C7 in the neck Atlas (C1)- allows you to nod yes Axis (C2)- Allows atlas to move side to side
7
Vertebral Column aka Spine 12 Thoracic Vertebrae Thorax = chest Articulate with the ribs T1-T12 5 Lumbar Vertebrae: Supports the lower back Largest and strongest of the vertebrae L1-L5
8
Vertebral Column aka Spine 1 Sacrum: Triangular bone composed of 5 fused sacral vertebrae (immovable) 1 Coccyx: 4 fused sacral vertebrae (immovable) Articulates with the sacrum
9
Vertebral Column aka Spine
10
Structure of the Vertebrae Body: thick, disk shaped front portion Weight-bearing of the vertebra Vertebral arch: extends backwards from the body Spinous Process: single sharp, slender projection Vertebral Foramen: hole which contains the spinal cord
11
Chapter 6 Bones
12
Thorax Thorax-entire chest Thoracic Cage: bony cage formed by the Sternum, Costal Cartilage, Ribs Protects the thoracic organs
13
Thorax Sternum: breastbone Flat, narrow bone, made of 3 parts Manubrium: handle-like upper part Body: middle and largest part Xiphoid process: lowest and smallest part Can fracture during CPR
14
Thorax Ribs 12 pairs True Ribs (1-7): directly attached to the sternum by costal cartilage False Ribs (8-12): costal cartilage is indirectly to the sternum or not attached at all Floating Ribs (11, 12): only attached to the thoracic vertebrae
