Seminar Nine/Week Nine You made it!

Reminders…. All work must be submitted by our final day of class! ◦ No work will be accepted after that point This is our final Seminar. ◦ No Seminar will be held next week. Your final project is due this week! ◦ This is not a project I would submit late, or not at all! Submit this on time!

Unit Nine –Project Project is due this week! For this project view the video “Jan and Ken” by clicking on the link located in our classroom. Answer the questions listed on the project page. Use the concepts in Unit 9 to answer the following questions on conflict in interpersonal relationships. RUBRIC IS LOCATED IN THE SYLLABUS!

Final Project, cont. Using the chapters on language and emotions to help frame your answer, suggest two ways that Ken could open this conversation more productively. For instance, clearly expressing his emotions and using “I” language. How do you perceive Jan’s effort to convince Ken to forgive her? Based on what you have learned in this chapter, suggest two ways she might more effectively seek Ken’s forgiveness. The conversation so far seems to be framed in a win-lose orientation to conflict. Each person wants to be right, to win at the expense of the other. How can Jan and Ken move their conflict discussion into a win-win orientation? Review the eight conflict-management skills discussed in the text. Identify three examples of these skills in the dialogue between Jan and Ken. Identify three places in the dialogue where Jan and Ken missed opportunities to manage conflict successfully. What did you learn from this project?

Questions…. Any Questions on the unit 9 project?

Discussion… What are the principles of conflict?

Discussion… What are the orientations to conflict? Which do you tend to use most often (if you do not know, take the quick quiz on page 250 of the text)?

Discussion… Think about the ways you typically respond to conflict. Do you tend to rely on one or two of the four responses in the text? Explain. Are your response tendencies consistent with research findings in the text about women and men in general? Why or why not?

Discussion… Which conflict-management skill do you consider yourself good at using and which do you need to develop more? How do you plan to develop these skills?
