6 Examples: Who/Which: The yellow bellied sapsucker, which is native to Canada and the Norther United States, destroys young trees by sucking from the branches. Who/Which: Many people are not aware of Tiki Tom, who lived alone for years on a deserted island. “ly” Word: The fox casually mentioned how pleased he would be to hear the crow sing. Because: The hare was delighted because he knew it would be an easy race.

Quality Adjective: The crowd became steaming mad when the concert did not begin on time. W.W.W.A.S.I.A: The hare dozed peacefully while the tortoise plodded persistently.

8 Sentence Openers 1. Subject Opener: What is a subject? The subject of a sentence is the person, place, thing, or idea that is doing or being something. You can find the subject of a sentence if you can find the verb. Ask the question, "Who or what 'verbs' or 'verbed'?" and the answer to that question is the subject. The tortoise felt confident and challenged the hare race. One cloudy morning, a powerful lion meandered through the woods. However, he was a quaint little man with a green suit.

Prepositional What is a preposition? a word governing, and usually preceding, a noun or pronoun and expressing a relation to another word or element in the clause, as in “the man on the platform,” “she arrived after dinner,” “what did you do it for ? In a flurry, the shocked hare dashed towards the finish line. Up above the village, Peter sat and wondered how to relieve his boredom. Since last year, the killer bees have been found as far north as Arizona.

10 Sentence Openers (continued) 3. “ly”: What is an adverb? a word or phrase that modifies or qualifies an adjective, verb, or other adverb or a word group, expressing a relation of place, time, circumstance, manner, cause, degree, etc. (e.g., gently, quite, then, there ) Calmly the triumphant tortoise placed his foot over the finish line.
