LT: I am learning how convection current works. The purpose is to identify how particle movement affects our lives. Today I will read, mark text, and take notes and explain on what is happening to the lithosphere. Warm-up:1) Where does the force come from to move the lithosphere? CW: Convection current And its forces HW: DC signed - Be prepared to discuss plate movement and why by showing your drawings Language Goal! I can use the vocabulary words, diverging, converging and transforming plates, Pangaea and continental drift. Concept Goal!!! How does the convection current affect the lithosphere?
3
Classwork Read Section Summary Mark section summary – Number paragraphs – Circle numbers and vocabulary words – Underline facts Take Cornell notes

Questions over reading… Draw and Describe what happens when… – A. two plates carrying oceanic crust collide – B. when tow plates carrying continental crust collide. – C. when two plated carrying oceanic curst collides with a plate carrying continental crust. Explain what force caused the movement of the continents from one supercontinent to their present positions

LT: I am learning how convection current works. The purpose is to identify how particle movement affects our lives. Today we will learn how convection forces move the lithosphere and how this movement affects the lithosphere. Warm-up: Entrance Ticket: How come the crust/lithoshpere is broken into plates and how do they cause changes on the Earth’s surface? CW: plate boundaries HW: None Language Goal! I can use the vocabulary words, diverging, converging and transforming plates, Pangaea and continental drift. Concept Goal!!! How does the convection current affect the lithosphere?
8
How come the lithosphere is broken into plates? Where does the energy come from to move the lithosphere? Do all plates move the same? Explain why What takes place on top of the lithosphere when plates move?
9
Remember the 3 forces you did to your milky way? 1) TENSION 2) COMPRESSION 3) SHEARING Where does the force come from to move the plates around?

11
Plate Boundaries Divergent boundaries -- where new crust is generated as the plates pull away from each other. Convergent boundaries -- where crust is destroyed as one plate dives under another. Transform boundaries -- where crust is neither produced nor destroyed as the plates slide horizontally past each other.

Ring of Fire
31
The Pacific Ring of Fire, or just Ring of Fire for short, is an area where a large number of earthquakes and volcanic eruptions occur in the basin of the Pacific Ocean. In a 40,000 km (25,000 mi) horseshoe shape, it is associated with a nearly continuous series of oceanic trenches, volcanic arcs, and volcanic belts and/or plate movements. The Ring of Fire has 452 volcanoes and is home to over 75% of the world's active and dormant volcanoes. [1] It is sometimes called the circum-Pacific belt or the circum-Pacific seismic belt earthquakesvolcanicPacific Oceanoceanic trenches volcanic arcsvolcanic belts dormant volcanoes [1]
32
About 90% [2] of the world's earthquakes and 81% [3] of the world's largest earthquakes occur along the Ring of Fire. Also, many of the world's volcanoes are located here. The next most seismic region (5–6% of earthquakes and 17% of the world's largest earthquakes) is the Alpide belt, which extends from Java to Sumatra through the Himalayas, the Mediterranean, and out into the Atlantic. The Mid-Atlantic Ridge is the third most prominent earthquake belt. [2] [3]Alpide beltJavaSumatraHimalayasMediterraneanAtlanticMid-Atlantic Ridge
33
So, what is happening in the ring of fire?
34
Do you know A, B & C? 1.Divergent – mid ocean ridge 2.Convergent 3.Convection currents A B C
35
Hot Spots
36
So what is a hot spot?
37
Hot spot Location in Earth’s surface that experiences hot magma seeping up through the Earth’s crust for a long period of time…. Where are other hot spots? Locate them on your map.
39
Magnitude of Earthquake on Richter Scale Description of the EarthquakeEffects of the EarthquakesOccurrence Frequency Less than 2.0MicroThe earthquake is not feltApproximately, 8000 per day 2.0 to 2.9MinorNormally not felt, but recordedApproximately 1000 per day 3.0 to 3.9Minor Normally felt, but rarely are any damages caused Approximately 49,000 per year 4.0 to 4.9Light Often felt indoor, with shaking of indoor items and rattling noises. Significant damage is not caused Approximately 6200 per year 5.0 to 5.9Moderate Major damage can be caused to poorly constructed buildings and little damage to well constructed buildings Approximately 800 per year 6.0 to 6.9Strong It can be very destructive in areas as far as 160 kilometers from the epicenter in populated areas Approximately 120 per year 7.0 to 7.9Major It is known to cause severe damage over larger areas Approximately 18 per year 8.0 to 8.9Great It can cause severe damage in several hundred miles across Approximately 1 per year 9.0 to 9.9Great Devastating in areas for several thousands of miles Approximately 1 per 20 years 10.0 +EpicHas never been recorded Extremely low and cannot be estimated
