Sentence Types & Structure

Simple Sentences also called independent clauses Simple sentences have just one clause with a subject and a predicate. They may have additional phrases. Example I went to the park to eat a hamburger. Kyle, Keith, and Doug, my best friend from middle school, went to the playhouse and watched Shakespeare’s Hamlet.

Compound Sentence Two or more independent clauses joined with a coordinating conjunction. Use commas between clauses. Example I went home, so I could get some sleep. Doug did his math work, and then he went outside to play.

Complex Sentences Two or more clauses joined with a subordinating conjunction. Each clause has a subject and a predicate. If you begin a sentence with a subordinating conjunction, there MUST be a comma after the first clause. If the subordinate clause comes at the end of the sentence, you do not need to use a comma. Because you were kind, the person felt better. You should sing because singing is fun.

Compound-Complex Sentences Has at least 2 independent clauses and one or more dependent (or subordinate) clauses. Examples Because I paid attention, I got an A on the test, and I was so happy. I went home because it was getting late, but I had to wait on the porch until my mom got home.
