2 Building a New World To prevent another war, FDR wanted a new international political organization. In 1944 delegates from 39 countries met to discuss the new organization that was to be called the United Nations.

3 United Nations April 25, 1945 – reps from 50 countries met in San Francisco to create the charter, or constitution. Set up a General Assembly. Each member gets 1 vote. Britain, France, China, Soviet Union, and the U.S. were permanent members of the Security Council with veto power.

4 International Military Tribunal August 1945 – IMT was created by the U.S., Britain, France, and Soviet Union to punish German and Japanese leaders for war crimes. IMT tried German leaders at the Nuremburg trials.
