The Respiratory System
2
What is breathing? Refers to the movement of air into and out of your lungs
3
The two main functions of the respiratory system are: 1: Moves oxygen from the outside environment into the body 2: Removes CO 2 and H 2 O from the body
4
What are alveoli? Where are they found? Alveoli are air sacs found at the ends of the bronchioles Gas exchange occurs here
5
The Pathway of Air Each step of the respiratory system: 1: NOSE – blood vessels warm the air Mucus & hair (cilia) trap particles to prevent them from going into the lungs
6
Next…… 2: PHARYNX – back of the throat, shared with the digestive system
7
And then…. 3: TRACHEA – windpipe, tube with a series of ridges lined with cilia and mucus
8
Just a few more steps…. 4: BRONCHI (lungs) – directs air into the lungs (main organs of the respiratory system), branch into smaller and smaller bronchioles
9
And finally….. 5: ALVEOLI – “grapes” or air sacs at the ends of the bronchioles, CO 2 and O 2 are exchanged here through the capillaries
10
The gas exchange: What is exchanged inside the lungs? How does this exchange occur? Air enters the alveoli, oxygen passes through the wall of the alveoli and then through the capillary walls into the RBC. Carbon dioxide passes through the capillary walls, through the alveoli walls and is breathed out
11
Gas Exchange in Detail…..
12
What is Cellular Respiration? A chemical reaction inside cells O 2 + glucose Energy + CO 2 + H 2 O
