4 The teenage years are always challenging. With school demands increasing, and college applications looming, teenagers are faced with many challenges as they edge towards adulthood and independence. During this time, some parents take a step back and let their offspring take the lead, while other parents, termed helicopter parents, see it as their duty to watch and even control their child’s every move. While it is understandable that parents would want to protect their children, undoubtedly, helicopter parenting is not the most effective form of parenting. Constantly ‘hovering’ over a teenager can inhibit their social and emotional development, and render them incapable of navigating the world.

5 Body 1 and Body 2 1. Transition/Topic sentence: Reason helicopter parenting is/is not effective. 2. Expansion sentence: Explain what you mean. 3. Introduce first quote/evidence: According to... In a recent study… 4. Quote and MLA citation: “…” (source 1). 5. Elaboration: Explain how this proves that helicopter parenting is/is not effective. (Add second quote and second elaboration) 6. Concluding sentence: Restate claim if necessary.

6 1. Helicopter parenting does not allow children to develop the responsibility and independence required to be successful in the world. 2.If a child is constantly being defended and taken care of by their parents, they will never learn to do this themselves. 3+4. Parents who utilize this method essentially “take on a role of problem solver and door opener” for their kids at an age when they are trying to “make their first real independent step into the world” (source 1). 5. When a person is a teenager, they are meant to be learning life skills that they will use for the rest of their lives. If parents control their schedules and prevent them from “severing the umbilical cord,” their child may be left scrambling to navigate the world later in life (source 1). They will not know how to be responsible for themselves. 6. Clearly, this is an irresponsible style of parenting.

7 Counterclaim Paragraph Conversely, many people argue that by not helicopter parenting, the safety of teenagers could be compromised. Indeed, many are “terrified of giving [their children] a fraction of the freedom they once enjoyed” (source 2). This is simply not true. In 1999, an in-depth study found that “only 155 children nationwide” were abducted by a stranger (source 2); meanwhile, “2,931 children under 15 died as passengers in car accidents” (source 2). This means, statistically, a child is less safe in the car with family than wandering around their neighborhoods learning valuable life skills. Helicopter parents are not promoting the safety of their child; this parenting method is not effective.
