Irish Influence in America U.S. History Tessa Tibbott
2
St. Patrick’s Day Perhaps the most obvious influence the Irish had on America was through it’s holidays; St. Patty’s Day to be exact. Saint Patrick was prayed to by the Irish for good crops and when farmers were blessed with plentiful fields in the spring they thanked him for the marking of the end of winter. We still celebrate this today on March 17 th each year.
3
Superstitions Another tradition and belief from Ireland that we have accepted in America is the belief of superstitions. Myths and legends such as black cats crossing your path and finding a four leaf clover originated in Ireland and were brought over by the Irish Immigrants.
4
Alcohol Many alcoholic drinks and their mixture recipes have been brought over by Irish immigrants. This is the main reason that people think of Irish people as lazy drunks. Even though this is not true, our perception has been tainted by their influence on our culture.
5
Performing Arts The art of music and dancing has long been a part of each culture. When the immigrants came to America in search for a new life, they brought with them Celtic music, clogging, and eventually even more types of dancing. We still practice these today.
